Famous for extraordinary renderings of dogs, Marguerite Kirmse (1885-1954) was arguably America's finest pet artist.  She was born in England and schooled at The Royal Academy of Music.  She emigrated to the United States, and there she joined her love for dogs and art.   Perhaps her most prolific and successful period was the 1910s.  She was in high demand for book illustrations and her etchings of dogs, many belonging to Kirmse and her husband, a former kennel club president.  Though she is famous for a great body of work, fewer oils ever come into the marketplace.  This one is a very fine example.  The canvas is entirely intact--never mounted on board.  It could be cleaned, but in general...  exceptional as the artist herself.

The result is one beautiful figure, ready for a grand home or office. This bull is in generally good condition with one exception, a portion of his left ear has been chipped off. We think he still cuts a forboding stance. The perfect gift for the Taurus in your life. Approximate Dimensions: 46"L X 11"W X 30"H

Antique Statuette Bois de Chine, Wooden Chinese Guardian Figure. Southwestern Old Navajo Sterling Silver and Turquoise Concho Belt
Antique Statuette Bois de Chine, Wooden Chinese Guardian Figure. Fine antique items of wood from China are disappearing from the marketplace.  Figures that "look" old are everywhere.   Genuine articles are protected by the State. The reason being is that wood, having an ephemoral nature, decays quickly when left to the elements.  Thus, to obtain old treasures, as pictured, you must seek out reputable dealers.  This piece came to us by way of Paris--a dealer we've used for years.  At one time, this tomb guardian perhaps wielded a spear, which is missing.  Otherwise, the general condition is excellent.  Touches of chocolate brown, cream and terracotta paint mingle to extraordinary effect.  Use this fine example as a fierce desk accessory,  impressive mantle decor, or anywhere that needs charm and protection.   We keep him away from direct sunlight or halogen lighting.  You can be his next custodian.

Rare and very old, this pair of alter sticks has been electrified as table lamps.  They were carved on a manual lathe and by hand, then painstakingly gilded.  Only one side is gessoed and gilt, as these were actually part of an alter arrangement or used in a niche to light an early church.  The back sides were left unadorned to save the cost of embellishment. Appropriate acanthus bobeches where the candles sit have been replaced.  Lower base is also a latter addition.  Otherwise, the antique portion is pristine.

Approximate Dimensions:  26 1/2"H (to top of finial) X 6"W (square base)   Includes ivory cloth shades.
