Antique Statuette Bois de Chine, Wooden Chinese Guardian Figure
Antique 19th Century French Architectural Clock Face
Antique Statuette Bois de Chine, Wooden Chinese Guardian Figure. Fine antique items of wood from China are disappearing from the marketplace. Figures that "look" old are everywhere. Genuine articles are protected by the State. The reason being is that wood, having an ephemoral nature, decays quickly when left to the elements. Thus, to obtain old treasures, as pictured, you must seek out reputable dealers. This piece came to us by way of Paris--a dealer we've used for years. At one time, this tomb guardian perhaps wielded a spear, which is missing. Otherwise, the general condition is excellent. Touches of chocolate brown, cream and terracotta paint mingle to extraordinary effect. Use this fine example as a fierce desk accessory, impressive mantle decor, or anywhere that needs charm and protection. We keep him away from direct sunlight or halogen lighting. You can be his next custodian.
Approximate Dimensions: 13 1/2"H X 5"W (At widest point) Depth is also about 5"
Here at CHURCHILL, we love decorating in fresh ways by using wonderful examples of antique architecture coupled with fresh fabrics and furnishings. This blend of old and new is a winning combination. After scouring the world, we bring you this weathered wood antique clock face from a dismantled building in France. The painted date reads "1867." While it's unfortunate to lose the building, this unique item can be cherished for generations. It measures approximately 4 1/2' square. With a little care, it could be fashioned to work as a clock again. Inquire with CHURCHILL for more information. You can also just keep the hands directed at cocktail time. Cheers!
Antique African Chiwara "Mask" Figure
Antique Rare Portrait of a Regal Lady, 18th Century Oil on Canvas
Antique African Chiwara "Mask" Figure. This item comes to us from Mali, Africa. It was part of a centuries old tradition used in tribal dance. The morphic animal resembles an antelope, and it represents the spirit of the god Chiwara. Young males and females of the Bamana people would carry this type of figure to celebrate prosperity and produce strong able farmers. Chiwara "masks," as they are referred to, make stunning focal points, adding interest to a mantlepiece, a wall niche, a game room, a gentleman's study, etc. The body is carved of wood, and it is decorated in cloth tassles and copper applique.

Antique Rare Portrait of a Regal Lady, 18th Century Oil on Canvas This painting, though unsigned, is attributed to Henrick Tischbein, German, 1722-1789. Known as Tischbein the Elder, his works command great respect in the art world. This exquisite portrait positively defines a woman of regal blood and knowing glance... relishing in her finery. Large pearls and extravagant lace bespeak her station. Tischbein and his family have a long standing record of painting nobility, mythology and history. Antique Signed Pekingese or Japanese Chin Dog Oil Portrait, G. Morlaux, 1928. Here at CHURCHILL, we ADORE dogs. This posing cutie was painted with the softened brush of an expert European hand. American portraits of this time tended to take on hard, crisp edges. That's not to say that the execution is not detailed and exact in our example, quite the contrary. In fact, in Morlaux' long lifespan (1900-2000), it's obvious that he carefully studied the skills of the Northern Renaissance painters. Signed in lower right, "Morlaux, G 1928" It is currently unframed. Contact CHURCHILL as we are happy to select a suitable vintage frame.
Approximate Dimensions: 19 3/4"W X 15 3/4"H X 1"D (Unframed size)
Antique (Pair) 19th Century Paintings Depicting Native Americans Signed Henri Moreau, Belgian. A truly rare oxymoron, this colorful pair of 19th century paintings shows what appear to be native Americans against an alpine background. Belgian painter Henri Moreau never visited North America. Rather, he allowed his vivid imagination to postulate--and that he did. A master of treating the nude, muscularity and posture are very well rendered. Moreau, father of the well known street painter Max Moreau, chose to paint beauty and whimsy. He loved flowers as is obvious here. One title is ledgible in pencil on the reverse, "Valley of the Hawk." A collection of Americana would be remiss without including these early works by the charming Monsieur Moreau (1869-1943).

Thoroughbred Horse in Stall, British 19th Century Oil Painting. For equestrians everywhere, finely painted examples of traditional horses are always in demand and highly coveted. Ralph Lauren uses them with relish as backdrops to his home and apparel collections. This is one of the nicest we have offered. The chestnut colored steed stands sublimely against an olive background. English stirrup and bridle glisten brightly in the low light. Original water gilded frame accentuates the painting well, too, though it shows some loss to the gesso.
Approximate Dimensions: 30"W X 24"H X 2 1/2"D (Overall dimensions of frame) Note: Painting is executed on masonite board.

Signed Oil Painting , Indian Art #19, Carl Schmidt, c 1920
Antique Large Rare 19th Century Carved Buddhist Monk Figure
Signed Oil Painting , Indian Art #19, Carl Schmidt, c 1920 .A fine example of famed California artist Carl Schmidt's work. Not to be confused with the expressionist, spelled with "K." His most prolific art was produced in San Bernardino, and he established himself with fine landscapes, murals, and still lifes. This is a beautiful piece from the latter. Schmidt's paintings are illusions of the real, with strokes of an impressionist. Oil on canvas. Highly sought after by collectors of California regional genre--quite a find!
Approximate Dimensions: 38"H X 40"L (overall size in frame)
Antique Large Rare 19th Century Carved Buddhist Monk Figure. We shudder to recommend someone buy a piece for investment, preferring to offer items to be enjoyed for their sheer beauty and rarity. However, this seated Buddhist monk figure could always be an exception. He offers perhaps the best of both "worlds." Rare, lovely and well priced, this stunning bastion of mysticism and calm beckons to his viewers. The figure is entirely hand carved, and it is mostly intact, with partial areas of the throne lost from wood rot which do not detract from the overall piece. He still retains both of his original porcelain eyes and a reddish cloth tassel on his cap. The stylized robe suggests stone statuary in the Gandaran style as does the monumental treatment of the facial details. Contact us anytime for further information.

Signed Douglas Arthur Teed (American, 1860-1929), this oil on canvas depicts a pastoral scene of a river bend, European architecture and trees. Teed received praise for his impressionistic style, and he never followed the modernist movement with his contemporaries. He was very accomplished for portraits of members of Congress and the Supreme Court.
Approximate Dimension: Outer gilt frame measures 17 1/2"H X 25"W
NOTE: Photographed in different lighting to depict color variations from warm browns to soft pastels.
Forestscape, 20th Century, American School Painting, Oil on Canvas Board. This Modernist Movement painting perhaps dates into the 1970s. Strong chartreuse and turquoise dominate with small, pink wildflowers in the foreground. Not surprisingly, it was accomplished on prepared masonite and canvas. Painters of that time were about fast art, valuing instinct and gesture as opposed to overworking a piece, much akin to Pollack. The painting is signed in the lower right, "CB." It was procurred from a fine east coast collection With a little research, it might hang in MOMA.

PAIR 17th Century Oil Paintings of Trophy Fowls, Signed Von Hamilton
LARGE Italian Marble Figure of Bull
PAIR 17th Century Oil Paintings of Trophy Fowls, Signed Von Hamilton. This pair of fine oils is attributed to Flemish artist Philipp Ferdinand Von Hamilton. Von Hamilton, also known as de Hamilton was born in Brussels. He, along with three sons, were all master court painters to the crowned heads of Europe. These paintings have been professionally conserved, re-stretched, and they're ready to hang. Some overpainting could be easily accomplished where the canvas is slightly worn. Frames are perhaps 19th century. They exhibit some shrinkage, but they showcase the paintings beautifully.
Approximate Dimensions: 26"H X 23"W X 1 1/2"D (outside dimensions of frame)
This bull did not come to CHURCHILL easily. He's stubborn and heavy! He is constructed of natural peachy pink Italian marble with charcoal gray veining. The result is one beautiful figure, ready for a grand home or office. This bull is in generally good condition with one exception, a portion of his left ear has been chipped off. We think he still cuts a forboding stance. The perfect gift for the Taurus in your life.

A Pair of Carved Marble Large Scale Figures of Spaniels
Antique Chinese Hand Carved Fortune Figure
A pair of carved marble, large scale, figures of spaniels. Whimsically carved white marble spaniel statues could sit as guardians on brick plinths beside a gate, beside any doorway, or paired in a threshold to give presence and elegance to a special room-- even fireside. One spaniel, is baring his teeth; the other is relaxed with mouth closed. These pedigreed beauties are vintage, extremely detailed, and they are waiting patiently to be adopted and cherished.
Approximate Dimensions: 36"H X 19"Diameter Base
Antique Chinese Hand Carved Fortune Figure Procurred from a venerable dealer, this carved Chinese figure adds drama and mysticism anywhere he is placed. Examine the photos carefully; you are almost transported by his gaze alone. Though most of the original paint has long since worn away with time, the colors that remain are bronze, cream and terra cottta, with subtle touches of gold leaf here and there. The piece was carved from a single block of wood with some shrinkage details. He holds what looks to be a treasure box, spreading good fortune wherever he goes. Who couldn't use a sage old figure like this?

Toy Bulldog, Oil on Canvas Signed Painting by Marguerite Kirmse
Antique Rare Bronze Dore Plaque of Mythological Scene
Famous for extraordinary renderings of dogs, Marguerite Kirmse (1885-1954) was arguably America's finest pet artist. She was born in England and schooled at The Royal Academy of Music. She emigrated to the United States, and there she joined her love for dogs and art. Perhaps her most prolific and successful period was the 1910s. She was in high demand for book illustrations and her etchings of dogs, many belonging to Kirmse and her husband, a former kennel club president. Though she is famous for a great body of work, fewer oils ever come into the marketplace. This one is a very fine example. The canvas is entirely intact--never mounted on board. It could be cleaned, but in general... exceptional as the artist herself.
Approximate Dimensions: 18 1/2"W X 22"H x 1 1/2"D (Overall dimensions of frame)
