A pair of marble neoclassical style marble relief rondeles.  The first one depicting Cupid carrying a flambeau aloft, riding on the back of a nymph. The second depicting a Nike carrying two putti.  Both are framed by heavy 2 1/2" thick iron bezels. The first rondele has been exposed to more weather, and it shows more age than the latter.  They are  nonetheless very impressive.

Pair of Painted Wooden Decorative Panels Bronze Statue of Hermes, Ferdinand Barbedienne Foundry, Circa 1850
Pair of Painted Wooden Decorative Panels.  One panel of floral designs in soft shades of cream, pinks and apricots.  The other in slightly stronger colors of greens, and terra cottas.  The panels measure approximately 2 1/2' wide x 3 ft tall.  Canvas is painted, and gessoed onto wooden panels. Antique bronze statue of Hermes, signed. The story of Ferdinand Barbedienne and his French metalworks foundry is almost legendary.  Amongst sculptors, this foundry was considered the ultimate in quality.  Barbedienne and his partner mastered a technique to take early bronzes and reduce them in size for a burgeoning market.  The older pieces were made after classical sculpture, both Roman and Greek.  Later pieces were cast for current masters of the Victorian Age.   Barbedienne's death cast a shadow on the industry for years, and he is remembered for reaching a zenith in bronze making.

Here we see Hermes, son of Zeus, being born aloft on the wind, as messenger to the gods.  His father gave him the domed hat to protect him from the elements and the winged sandals for swiftness.  He bears the herald's staff, or caduceus as his totem. The perfect gift for the doctor in your family

Signed Paintings Brittany & Bretagne, Late 19th Century Oil Paintings on Board Antique Oil Painting of Moonlight over Ocean Cliffs
Signed Paintings Brittany & Bretagne, Late 19th Century Oil Paintings on Board. A redundant title, in that Brittany and Bretagne describe the same place, this pair of small oils becons the viewer to become part of the magical bucolic scenes.  The northern most Atlantic region of France combines treacherous seas and rough, rocky shores.  These paintings describe just that.  They were expertly rendered in the Impressionistic style of the day.  Each employs a similar palette in lavender, chaulk, cream, green, and touches of accent red.  The oil medium is thick, textural impasto. The signature looks to be "Tanaux," undoubtedly a worthy painter, perhaps with a wealthy tourist clientele.

Approximate Dimensions:  15 3/4"L X 12 1/2"H X 5/8"D (Overall size with frame)
This painting is reminiscent of those by famed English artist Joseph Turner whose works are considered 18th century masterpieces.  The beguiling treament of night skies and  sparkling water are the careful work of a highly skilled artist.  Though unsigned, the piece has a very old purveyor's mark on the reverse:  Earles Galleries, Philadelphia.  The subtle use of color justaposed with consummate craft in near mint condition make it  absolute collector's gold.

Our Price: $1,250.00
Antique 19th Century Grayscale Painting of Thoroughbred Horse, Oil on Board Antique Old Molded Stone Sculpture of Sheep
Antique 19th Century Grayscale Painting of Thoroughbred Horse, Oil on Board. During the latter part of the Victorian Era, artists experimented in many directions.  One classic direction was the advent of grayscale paintings.  Though common with Renaissance painters, too,  and particularly so with those who also sculpted, these paintings required discipline and good knowledge of light to dark.  Restricted to only grays, black and white, these artworks have really taken center stage. They are highly foraged by interior designers who craft predominantly in neutrals.
Our single thoroughbred horse stands stately with his carefully curried coat gleeming.  Frame is veneered with bird's eye maple.  Lost portions could be replaced if desired.   Signed on reverse, H.E. Lucas-Lucas "Bluejacket."

Viennese Cold Painted Bronze Dachsund on Pillows Sculpture. For avid collectors of Viennese bronzes or anyone who loves dogs as much as we do, CHURCHILL brings you this lovely little bronze dachsund napping away.  It is cold-painted with traces of turquoise, red, and gold.  There is text on the top pillow which could be foundry information or a signature, or both. Underneath, one can make out the numbers 1924, which is probably the date.  These figures tend to range from latter 19th century to the 1920s.   This could be a Bergman Studio piece as it was purchased from an important collection.  Regardless, this is one special pooch!

Approximate Dimensions:  4"L X 2"W X .75"H
This bull did not come to CHURCHILL easily.  He's stubborn and heavy!  He is constructed of natural peachy pink Italian marble with charcoal gray veining.  The result is one beautiful figure, ready for a grand home or office.  This bull is in generally good condition with one exception, a portion of his left ear has been chipped off.  We think he still cuts a forboding stance. Royal Dux Dual Compote with Lady amidst Shells Rare European Porcelain Figurine Buy Shop Collectible Antique Antique 19th Century Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory with Inlaid Ivory Frame
Collectors scour the world in search of what some believe is the world's finest porcelain from the Czech Republic, Royal Dux.  Our lovely lady holds a fishing net.  She is centered between two shell-shaped vessels.  Hues are very natural, soft beiges, browns, creams and greens.  Her face is almost ethereal with every nuance carefully captured.  The piece is marked with the traditional pale pink triangle, inscribed "Royal Dux Bohemia."  It also bears the mark "Made in Czechoslavakia," which was added to follow import laws imposed in 1918.   Our compote also has an "E" centered in the label, indicating it was made early, not long after 1918.  Although Royal Dux continued throughout the 20th Century until 1992, early pieces are most highly sought after.  Condition is mint without damage or mouding flaws, though some even collect rare pieces with those mistakes.

Antique 19th Century Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory with Inlaid Ivory Frame. Fine collections of French Empire style pieces are carefully assembled over lifetimes.   Often, life portraits (and death masks) of Napoleon are central to those collections.  While it was probably painted in the latter 19th century, this is one of the nicest porcelain paintings of "The Little Lieutenant" we have ever featured.  It is particularly unusual to find one framed with an intact ivory frame.  Most like this have long since lost pieces of veneer.  That's a tribute to the thoughtful Napoleonic collector who owned it.  Do you have a special emperor at home who would love this?
