Signed Oil Painting , Indian Art #19, Carl Schmidt, c 1920 .A fine example of famed California artist Carl Schmidt's work. Not to be confused with the expressionist, spelled with "K." His most prolific art was produced in San Bernardino, and he established himself with fine landscapes, murals, and still lifes. This is a beautiful piece from the latter. Schmidt's paintings are illusions of the real, with strokes of an impressionist. Oil on canvas. Highly sought after by collectors of California regional genre--quite a find!

Black lacquer ground against soft gold bas relief defines this incredible, Chinese masterpiece room screen. Beautiful garden scenes are depicted with smoke billowing from an incense burner. Ladies of court and palace guards are intricately hand carved. Equally fine reverse side is a foliate/bamboo scene, without characters, accomplished in soft aqua, lavendar and cream tones. Each of six panels measures 6' tall x 16" wide. This is a rare find, indeed.

This bull did not come to CHURCHILL easily. He's stubborn and heavy! He is constructed of natural peachy pink Italian marble with charcoal gray veining. The result is one beautiful figure, ready for a grand home or office. This bull is in generally good condition with one exception, a portion of his left ear has been chipped off. We think he still cuts a forboding stance. The perfect gift for the Taurus in your life.

A pair of carved marble, large scale, figures of spaniels. Whimsically carved white marble spaniel statues could sit as guardians on brick plinths beside a gate, beside any doorway, or paired in a threshold to give presence and elegance to a special room-- even fireside. One spaniel, is baring his teeth; the other is relaxed with mouth closed. These pedigreed beauties are vintage, extremely detailed, and they are waiting patiently to be adopted and cherished.

The benevolent Chinese goddess of mercy was never portrayed in a lovelier fashion. We literally scour the planet to find intact, antique wooden icons like this. Most have long since perished in fires, floods, wars, etc. This piece has stood the test of time. She dates perhaps to the mid 19th century or earlier. In her right hand she clasps a book or scroll which symbolizes truth and wisdom. Another interesting note is that these figures lean slightly forward in an effort to forever listen to cries from those in pain or need. Regardless of one's religion or lack thereof, this sentiment is worth celebrating in your home, garden or anywhere. We found her in Paris and brought her back to Kansas. Hope she is isn't feeling any pain from such a move. Namaste!

Viennese Cold Painted Bronze Dachsund on Pillows Sculpture. For avid collectors of Viennese bronzes or anyone who loves dogs as much as we do, CHURCHILL brings you this lovely little bronze dachsund napping away. It is cold-painted with traces of turquoise, red, and gold. There is text on the top pillow which could be foundry information or a signature, or both. Underneath, one can make out the numbers 1924, which is probably the date. These figures tend to range from latter 19th century to the 1920s. This could be a Bergman Studio piece as it was purchased from an important collection. Regardless, this is one special pooch!

Antique Late 19th Century Oil Painting of Sailboats. Though unsigned, this old and fabulous painting was perhaps created for those touring Europe in the late Victorian years. The artist used soothing earth toned colors perfectly adapted for today. Paintings of this type can be found, but it's unusual to find one in it's original stretcher, ie not transferred onto board. Condition is excellent. This size and variety of painting is ideal sitting in a small easel upon a mantle or shelf.

Bronze Figural Lamp of Three Graces after Canova Through the ages, images proliferate of three maidens grouped together as in our lovely bronze lamp. Canova's version showed three nudes, with their backs to the viewer, frolicking to entertain guests of the gods. They were, mythologically speaking, three daughters of Zeus. Here, we have a neoclassicized version resplendant with lovely bronze drapery and ornate hairstyles. It's the ideal lamp to greet guests on an entry table or beside a chair for reading (neutral linen shade offers nice general lighting). Invite the Three Graces in...Beauty, Charm and Joy, to embellish your home.

Antique Chinese Hand Carved Fortune Figure Procurred from a venerable dealer, this carved Chinese figure adds drama and mysticism anywhere he is placed. Examine the photos carefully; you are almost transported by his gaze alone. Though most of the original paint has long since worn away with time, the colors that remain are bronze, cream and terra cottta, with subtle touches of gold leaf here and there. The piece was carved from a single block of wood with some shrinkage details. He holds what looks to be a treasure box, spreading good fortune wherever he goes. Who couldn't use a sage old figure like this?

Signed Paintings Brittany & Bretagne, Late 19th Century Oil Paintings on Board. A redundant title, in that Brittany and Bretagne describe the same place, this pair of small oils becons the viewer to become part of the magical bucolic scenes. The northern most Atlantic region of France combines treacherous seas and rough, rocky shores. These paintings describe just that. They were expertly rendered in the Impressionistic style of the day. Each employs a similar palette in lavender, chaulk, cream, green, and touches of accent red. The oil medium is thick, textural impasto. The signature looks to be "Tanaux," undoubtedly a worthy painter, perhaps with a wealthy tourist clientele.
