Antique Chinese Temple Figure
Signed Oil Painting , Indian Art #19, Carl Schmidt, c 1920
Antique Chinese Temple Figure with original paint elements in gilt and terra cotta. Carved icon is seated with crossed legs and hands in prayer. Figure measures approx 8" tall. At Churchill, we group several of these icons on desktops, tabletops, and fireplace mantels.
Signed Oil Painting , Indian Art #19, Carl Schmidt, c 1920 .A fine example of famed California artist Carl Schmidt's work. Not to be confused with the expressionist, spelled with "K." His most prolific art was produced in San Bernardino, and he established himself with fine landscapes, murals, and still lifes. This is a beautiful piece from the latter. Schmidt's paintings are illusions of the real, with strokes of an impressionist. Oil on canvas. Highly sought after by collectors of California regional genre--quite a find!

Antique Large Rare 19th Century Carved Buddhist Monk Figure
Forestscape, 20th Century, American School Painting, Oil on Canvas Board
Antique Large Rare 19th Century Carved Buddhist Monk Figure. We shudder to recommend someone buy a piece for investment, preferring to offer items to be enjoyed for their sheer beauty and rarity. However, this seated Buddhist monk figure could always be an exception. He offers perhaps the best of both "worlds." Rare, lovely and well priced, this stunning bastion of mysticism and calm beckons to his viewers. The figure is entirely hand carved, and it is mostly intact, with partial areas of the throne lost from wood rot which do not detract from the overall piece. He still retains both of his original porcelain eyes and a reddish cloth tassel on his cap. The stylized robe suggests stone statuary in the Gandaran style as does the monumental treatment of the facial details. Contact us anytime for further information.

Forestscape, 20th Century, American School Painting, Oil on Canvas Board. This Modernist Movement painting perhaps dates into the 1970s. Strong chartreuse and turquoise dominate with small, pink wildflowers in the foreground. Not surprisingly, it was accomplished on prepared masonite and canvas. Painters of that time were about fast art, valuing instinct and gesture as opposed to overworking a piece, much akin to Pollack. The painting is signed in the lower right, "CB." It was procurred from a fine east coast collection With a little research, it might hang in MOMA.

PAIR 17th Century Oil Paintings of Trophy Fowls, Signed Von Hamilton
LARGE Italian Marble Figure of Bull
PAIR 17th Century Oil Paintings of Trophy Fowls, Signed Von Hamilton. This pair of fine oils is attributed to Flemish artist Philipp Ferdinand Von Hamilton. Von Hamilton, also known as de Hamilton was born in Brussels. He, along with three sons, were all master court painters to the crowned heads of Europe. These paintings have been professionally conserved, re-stretched, and they're ready to hang. Some overpainting could be easily accomplished where the canvas is slightly worn. Frames are perhaps 19th century. They exhibit some shrinkage, but they showcase the paintings beautifully.
Approximate Dimensions: 26"H X 23"W X 1 1/2"D (outside dimensions of frame)
This bull did not come to CHURCHILL easily. He's stubborn and heavy! He is constructed of natural peachy pink Italian marble with charcoal gray veining. The result is one beautiful figure, ready for a grand home or office. This bull is in generally good condition with one exception, a portion of his left ear has been chipped off. We think he still cuts a forboding stance. The perfect gift for the Taurus in your life.

A Pair of Carved Marble Large Scale Figures of Spaniels
Toy Bulldog, Oil on Canvas Signed Painting by Marguerite Kirmse
A pair of carved marble, large scale, figures of spaniels. Whimsically carved white marble spaniel statues could sit as guardians on brick plinths beside a gate, beside any doorway, or paired in a threshold to give presence and elegance to a special room-- even fireside. One spaniel, is baring his teeth; the other is relaxed with mouth closed. These pedigreed beauties are vintage, extremely detailed, and they are waiting patiently to be adopted and cherished.
Approximate Dimensions: 36"H X 19"Diameter Base
Famous for extraordinary renderings of dogs, Marguerite Kirmse (1885-1954) was arguably America's finest pet artist. She was born in England and schooled at The Royal Academy of Music. She emigrated to the United States, and there she joined her love for dogs and art. Perhaps her most prolific and successful period was the 1910s. She was in high demand for book illustrations and her etchings of dogs, many belonging to Kirmse and her husband, a former kennel club president. Though she is famous for a great body of work, fewer oils ever come into the marketplace. This one is a very fine example. The canvas is entirely intact--never mounted on board. It could be cleaned, but in general... exceptional as the artist herself.

Signed Paintings Brittany & Bretagne, Late 19th Century Oil Paintings on Board. A redundant title, in that Brittany and Bretagne describe the same place, this pair of small oils becons the viewer to become part of the magical bucolic scenes. The northern most Atlantic region of France combines treacherous seas and rough, rocky shores. These paintings describe just that. They were expertly rendered in the Impressionistic style of the day. Each employs a similar palette in lavender, chaulk, cream, green, and touches of accent red. The oil medium is thick, textural impasto. The signature looks to be "Tanaux," undoubtedly a worthy painter, perhaps with a wealthy tourist clientele.

The Nez Perce indian tribe mostly resides in Idaho today. The tribe was originally large, and it spanned over much of the northwestern US. Now, most Nez Perse (pronouced nezz purse) live in traditional American homes and apartments. In earlier times, entire bands would follow the buffalo herds. Consequently, they were somewhat nomadic. To carry goods from camp to camp, bags like this one were fashioned out of dried cornhusks, then decorated with natural dyes. This piece was acquired through a Native American museum, and it is signed C. Askanay, '62.

Western Landscape Signed by Carl Schmidt (American 1885-1969)
Antique Northern Plains or Plateau Native American Parfleche
Western Landscape Signed by Carl Schmidt (American 1885-1969). Raised in Minnesota, then schooled formally at Chicago's Institute of Art, Carl Schmidt painted a name for himself in American history. He was best known as one of the foremost painters of the Grand Canyon. Monumental skies and horizons were his stock and trade. He also dabbled in religious art. Carl's works tend to be impressionistic, with mood and atmosphere. Pictured here is a lone sheep herder and his flock against purple toned mesas, perhaps near the four corners area of the US. Oil on canvas, applied to Masonite.
Approximate Dimensions: 24"L X 20"H (Outside frame size)
Antique Northern Plains or Plateau Native American Parfleche This is a fine example of older, well used storage envelopes or parfleches from Indian tribes of the Great Plains. For the connoissieur, it may be of Shoshone origin, instead. Vertical design divisions into three are many times from this tribe. They were made by the women of the tribe to transport foodstuffs and provisions for long buffalo hunting fores. Most were constructed of buffalo hide, which was cured out and painted with native mineral pigments. Designs tended to run in the family for many generations. This is a rare find.

Japanese Bronze Koi Decorated Vessel/Jardiniere
VIntage Native American Kachina Figure, Hopi Tribe
Our Price: $2,700.00
Sale Price: $2,295.00
You save $405.00!
Japanese Bronze Koi Decorated Vessel/Jardiniere. Good bronzes take on a patina over time that defies explanation. Some areas are brown, others gray, green, etc. The colors are arranged by Nature to splendid perfection. That describes the surface of this handsome vessel. Swimming koi surround the central sphere which is supported by a sturdy base. One caution, this vessel has no bottom, perhaps destroyed over time. It would be ideal to rig as a water feature, with water circulating into a reception pond. Or, merely enjoy it for the work of art that it is.... Age is difficult to discern, but the casting is impeccably smooth, with a couple gentle bruises here and there. It closely resembles antique pieces from the Shang Dynasty (China).
Approximate Dimensions: 18"H X 12"Diameter
Native American Kachina Figure, Hopi Tribe. Kachinas, or tihu as they are called in the Hopi language, embody things important to the survival of their tribe, like fertility, grain, clouds, rain, etc. This one is known as a dancing kachina, denoted by the rattle he carries. Objects like this were given to children, not as toys, but rather as the precious benevolent beings they represent. Kachinas, like bohdisattvas in the Buddhist faith, bring only good to those who keep them. This one is museum quality to become a treasured addition for a new or existing collector, or anyone in need of a benevolent spirit.
Approximate Dimensions: 12 1/2"H X 5 1/2"W X 6 1/2"D Note: Base material is probably cottonwood root, though some more modern artists have resorted to more plentiful swampwood from the southeastern US.
