Orthodox church relics are highly sought after in the marketplace. This particular icon has the date 1857 on the reverse. Earlier versions have back slat supports to prevent warping. Later kiln drying negated the need for this technique, though they continued to be used on larger format icons. The "riva" or protective tin cover is very ornate on this example. Applying the riva kept fingerprints and lips of the faithful from destroying the precious paintings over time. Use alone with an easel, on a wall, or collect en masse for chief affect.
