Louis XVI's reign in France was more restrained than his predecessors in many ways, including design. These decorative fire chenets reflect that slipping away, if you will, from the voluptuous Baroque years and the delicate frills of the Rococo. Gradually, elegant simplicity took the place of unbridaled florishes. Though these sweet, patinated bronze cherubs are swathed in gold dore, they sit very perfectly on neoclassic style plinths. Ideal of course for the hearth, but they can easily flank a mirror or painting on the mantle. Go one more step and convert them to a stellar pair of lamp bases.
