The Nez Perce indian tribe mostly resides in Idaho today.  The tribe was originally large, and it spanned over much of the northwestern US.   Now, most Nez Perse (pronouced nezz purse) live in traditional American homes and apartments.  In earlier times, entire bands would follow the buffalo herds.  Consequently, they were somewhat nomadic.  To carry goods from camp to camp, bags like this one were fashioned out of dried cornhusks, then decorated with natural dyes.  This piece was acquired through a Native American museum, and it is signed C. Askanay, '62.
