Mini Framed Portrait of Napoleon on Celluloid
Late 19th Century Russian Icon
Our Price:
$100.00
Our Price:
$650.00
Small and special...a well painted portrait of a youthful Napoleon. It's created in the same tradition as earlier paintings on ivory. This little French man is ready to hang from a ribbon on the wall or around your neck.
Approximate Dimensions: 2 3/8"H (includes bale) X 1 5/8"W
Orthodox church relics are highly sought after in the marketplace. This particular icon has the date 1857 on the reverse. Earlier versions have back slat supports to prevent warping. Later kiln drying negated the need for this technique, though they continued to be used on larger format icons. The "riva" or protective tin cover is very ornate on this example. Applying the riva kept fingerprints and lips of the faithful from destroying the precious paintings over time. Use alone with an easel, on a wall, or collect en masse for chief affect.
Approximate Dimensions: 7"H X 5 1/2"W X 3/4"D
Antique Diminutive Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory
Oil Painting of River Scene with Palms
Our Price:
$875.00
Our Price:
$895.00
Antique Diminutive Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory. Smalls or "diminutives," if you will, have really reached a zenith at fine auctions of late. Items relating to Napoleon have always garnered attention and, oddly enough, affection. Those of us who collect these things understand. This fine portrait is highly detailed upon close examination. It is also very much intact, regardless of our lighting. Frame is hardwood with gilt fillet.
Approximate Dimensions: 5" X 5" (overall frame size) X 1/2D
Oil painting of a landscape with river and palm trees. Framed painting measures 12" high x 11 3/4" wide.
provenance: Christie's
Rare Antique 18th Century Chinese Painting on Linen
Antique Oil Orchid Spray Painting Signed by Edward Barnard Lintott, American 1875-1951
Our Price:
$950.00
Our Price:
$1,300.00
Rare Antique 18th Century Chinese Painting on Linen. Much revered for their use of the "bird's eye view," the Chinese created what many believe was a precursor to modern cinematography. This painting employs that famous technique. Figures are grouped for artistic balance in an array that makes the viewer feel a part of the action, as if they are watching a film from above. Colors are bright--yet muted with time. The linen medium is in excellect condition. An archival cream linen mat and half inch hardwood frame complement the artwork.
Approximate Dimensions: 12 3/4"W X 18"H (overall size, framed)
Antique Oil Orchid Spray Painting signed by Edward Barnard Lintott, American 1875- 1951. An obvious fancier of Catleya orchids, painter Edward Lintott created this excellent botanical rendering in oil on canvas. It was later mounted on board, and it is currently framed with glass. Careful attention was given by the framer to space the pigment well away from the glass. The subject matter actually looks to be a coursage of orchids, nestled in perhaps Brake ferns and caught with a deep rose colored bow. The ground colors are terra cotta and olive green. Provenance is included with purchase.
Approximate Dimensions: 18"W X 15"H X 1.75"D (projection from wall) Note: Artwork itself measures about 13"W X 10"H
Antique 19th Century Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory with Inlaid Ivory Frame
Painting signed by Jon Corbino Mixed Media Hunt Scene, 1927
Our Price:
$1,450.00
Our Price:
$1,500.00
Antique 19th Century Portrait of Napoleon on Ivory with Inlaid Ivory Frame. Fine collections of French Empire style pieces are carefully assembled over lifetimes. Often, life portraits (and death masks) of Napoleon are central to those collections. While it was probably painted in the latter 19th century, this is one of the nicest porcelain paintings of "The Little Lieutenant" we have ever featured. It is particularly unusual to find one framed with an intact ivory frame. Most like this have long since lost pieces of veneer. That's a tribute to the thoughtful Napoleonic collector who owned it. Do you have a special emperor at home who would love this?
Approximate Dimensions: 5 1/2"H X 4 3/4"W X 1/2"D
Painting signed by Jon Corbino Mixed Media Hunt Scene, 1927. It's an honor to have the work of Jon Corbino at CHURCHILL. His accolades are almost endless. He is featured in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan and Whitney Museums of New York City, as well as major private collections. In his short life (1905-1964), Jon created artworks that are far reaching in both spirit and craft. Technically lauded for his smoldering use of blatant color, he also received acclaim for representing noble causes and plights, like The Great Depriession. Here, Jon created a special hunt scene, giving it passion and a true sense of place...all accomplished with simple line art and vibrant primary colors.
Approximate Dimensions: 16"H X 22"W X 1/2"D (overall size of frame)
De Orange Lou, Antique Landscape Painting by Jacob Huybrecht Hollestelle
Antique Botanical Painting on Tin, 19th Century
Our Price:
$1,525.00
Our Price:
$1,800.00
De Orange Lou, Antique Landscape Painting by Jacob Huybrecht Hollestelle. From what we can ascertain, JH Hollestelle (1858-1920), followed the Hague School of Dutch painters. This landscape is more loose and akin to French impressionist pieces of the time. Colors are subdued. The sky is soft gray blue; the trees are muted olive and brown. It is ready to hang. The ornate frame is original, and it is in nice repair considering it's age.
Approximate Dimensions: 17 1/2"W X 11 1/2"H X 1"D (Overall size framed) Signed in lower left, dated September 1900
Antique Botanical Painting on Tin, 19th Century. Procurred from a fine estate, this painting is more a botanical depiction than a simple floral. The varieties are painted in a northern Renaissance style, perfected by the 17th century Dutch. Leather leaf ferns, goldenrod, asters, etc, virtually come to life against a dramatic black ground. Probably painted in the latter half of the 19th century in the fall, as Hawthorne Ivy browns at that time. The work was accomplished on tin, and the ornate white frame is a later addition. The early painting was nailed to it's original housing, so nail holes can be seen on the edges. Perhaps allows us to suggest a small velvet fillet to conceal. Otherwise, the piece is near perfect. It would be even more dramatic if the frame were painted black.
Approximate Dimensions: 15 1/4"H X 13 1/4"W (Overall sized framed)
Antique 19th Century British Silhouette Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene
Antique Equadorian Retablo
Our Price:
$2,200.00
Our Price:
$2,400.00
This type of home accessory is considered "choice" among collectors. The artist actually painted the image in reverse on glass. While many silhouettes from the 19th century are profile portraits of family, this hunt scence is unusual. The scene shows a gentleman and a dog attending a mounted rider. Frame is warm honey colored burled wood.
Approximate Dimensions: 9"W X 7"H X 1" Depth from wall.
Antique Equadorian Retablo. Choice among collectors, Spanish Colonial period retablos have become very scarce. This piece was received as Equadorian. It is in good overall condition with some loss of paint. Wood panels are assembled with linen strips, still intact. Colors are soft pastels, in general, and details are very crisp. Congrats to it's new owner. We hope that is you....
Approximate Dimensions: 20"H X 16"W X 1"D
Painting of the Blessed Virgin in Water Gilded Frame
Antique Victorian Terrier Portrait Oil on Canvas, Circa 1895
Our Price:
$2,400.00
Our Price:
$2,500.00
Painting of the Blessed Virgin in Water Gilded Frame. Carefully examine all of the photos attached. The painting is very high caliber. It resembles an illuminated manuscript from centuries past. The madonna, wearing light blue, is "framed" in a trompe l'oeuil carved, inner surround. The actual frame is equally fine which is a testament to the astute work of the water gilder, an all but defunct trade. While many frames of this kind are in fragments, this one is surprisingly intact, with some repair and minor loss near the top.
Approximate Dimensions: 19"H X 13 1/4"W X 5"D
Antique Victorian Terrier Portrait Oil on Canvas, Circa 1895. Small dog portraits and accessories seem to be taking the auction houses by storm. Record prices are posting. At CHURCHILL, we just really love dogs. This one has kind eyes that demand attention. The painting is in generally good repair. One small worn area in the whiskers could be easily restored and some minor loss to foreground paint. Frame is brown oak.
Approximate Dimensions: 19 1/4"H X 15 1/4"W (Overall size framed)
Pair of Painted Wooden Decorative Panels
Forestscape, 20th Century, American School Painting, Oil on Canvas Board
Our Price:
$2,750.00
Our Price:
$2,800.00
Pair of Painted Wooden Decorative Panels. One panel of floral designs in soft shades of cream, pinks and apricots. The other in slightly stronger colors of greens, and terra cottas. The panels measure approximately 2 1/2' wide x 3 ft tall. Canvas is painted, and gessoed onto wooden panels.
This Modernist Movement painting perhaps dates into the 1970s. Strong chartreuse and turquoise dominate with small, pink wildflowers in the foreground. Not surprisingly, it was accomplished on prepared masonite and canvas. Painters of that time were about fast art, valuing instinct and gesture as opposed to overworking a piece, much akin to Pollack. The painting is signed in the lower right, "CB." It was procurred from a fine east coast collection With a little research, it might hang in MOMA.
Approximate Dimensions: 17 1/4"W X 14 1/4"H X 1 1/2"D (Overall size of frame)
Woodsman in Mountain Landscape, Signed 20th Century Oil Painting
Antique Late 19th Century Oil Painting of Sailboats
Our Price:
$2,900.00
Our Price:
$2,950.00
At CHURCHILL, we develop our collections from a gut reaction to the work. This beautiful oil signed Terry Bateman (T Swanton Bateman) immediately catapults the viewer into another place and time...one less crowded where solice can easily be found in the wilderness. Rendering in a painterly style, Bateman always thirsted for the wild, preferring it to his school lessons. Reared in Billings, Montana, one can impathize.
Approximate Dimensions: 25"W X 31"H X 1 3/4"D (overall dimensions framed) Oil on canvas
Antique Late 19th Century Oil Painting of Sailboats. Though unsigned, this old and fabulous painting was perhaps created for those touring Europe in the late Victorian years. The artist used soothing earth toned colors perfectly adapted for today. Paintings of this type can be found, but it's unusual to find one in it's original stretcher, ie not transferred onto board. Condition is excellent. This size and variety of painting is ideal sitting in a small easel upon a mantle or shelf.
Approximate Dimensions: 20 1/2"W X 13"H X 2"D (overall size framed)

Antique Painting, Oil on Board,Interior Scene signed by Ludvig Find, Danish 1869-1945
Our Price:
$3,200.00
Our Price:
$3,500.00
Antique Signed Pekingese or Japanese Chin Dog Oil Portrait, G. Morlaux, 1928. Here at CHURCHILL, we ADORE dogs. This posing cutie was painted with the softened brush of an expert European hand. American portraits of this time tended to take on hard, crisp edges. That's not to say that the execution is not detailed and exact in our example, quite the contrary. In fact, in Morlaux' long lifespan (1900-2000), it's obvious that he carefully studied the skills of the Northern Renaissance painters. Signed in lower right, "Morlaux, G 1928" It is currently unframed. Contact CHURCHILL as we are happy to select a suitable vintage frame.
Approximate Dimensions: 19 3/4"W X 15 3/4"H X 1"D (Unframed size)
Antique Painting, Oil on Board,Interior Scene signed by Ludvig Find, Danish 1869-1945. Noted impressionist, Ludvig Find, painted this captivating interior scene in the early 1900s. A figure sits at a table reading a newspaper while another appears to be doing needlework. The light source is a European style table lamp, expressed soley by its shape in solid, taupy white, reminiscent of master Georges de la Tour. Find was quite acclaimed, winning the bronze medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1900 and a host of other accolades across Europe. Year after year, Find won titles for his compositions and brilliant use of lighting. The piece is signed in the lower right, "Find." Exact date is not ledgible.
